top shows Xorg using around 100% cpu and xfsettingsd using around 10% during freeze. I stopped xfsettingsd using "quit program" in "all settings/session and startup/session" and saved the session for next startup. Once xfsettingsd had stopped freezes ceased but now only have basic window theme, icons and window decorations.
