>From trusty-proposed I first upgraded ghostscript (which also pulled in libgs9 and ghostscript-x) to 9.10~dfsg-0ubuntu10.1; the same problem remained. After then upgrading libgs9-common to 9.10~dfsg-0ubuntu10.1 I get a different failure mode: running epstopdf now, conversions which used to take seconds seem to be hanging indefinitely while the gs process takes up 100% of a CPU core.
