A workaround that's working for me is to switch to text console (Ctrl + Alt + F2) then back to the main console (Alt + F7) - thanks for mentioning this Nicholas Smith (nick-smith)!
Recently I've been noticing its not happening every time I suspend/resume. I haven't traced the related factors, maybe its only when I don't have the windows enlarged when I suspend?
