The recent xubuntu 14.04 release has made it much easier to install new
kernels on ageing Pentium Ms, which say they don't support PAE but in
fact do so without problem. An additional boot parameter (forcepae)
gets one going. I discovered that it was in principle possible to do
this on 12.10 to 13.10 using an application add-in, but it was a little
more complex to do so. The better support in 14.04 makes it all much
easier.
So I have now moved on to the latest kernel (and 14.04). After several
days I've had no problems, so I've changed the status of this bug to
'fixed released'.
