I agree with your assessment that blaming the machine is not a way to fix the bug, hence my comment about not really knowing the best way to handle it. On one hand, your machine is rather low-spec by today's standards, which is probably why this was overlooked. On the other, as you pointed out, it does match the minimum spec stated for Ubuntu, and therefore this behavior should not be there.
