Same problem here, using Kubuntu 14.04. Tested the usb disk creator by
launching it from the command line. This is the output:

On a side note, the drive I am trying to erase is completely free, but
the "Make Startup Disk" button is disabled. I tried filling it with an
empty fat32, ntfs or ext4 partition and I tried with no partitions at
all, but the button is always disabled.
