As noted I made no changes to which driver Ubuntu has detected and
chosen and clicking Test left a scrambled screen which subsequently
locked up (see attachment for what happens) the laptop and required a
hard reset.

As I say that is what happens if I just boot the live CD on my Thinkpad
T40 (32MB Radeon 7500) and then open displayconfig-gtk and hit Test. I
have not installed Gutsy Tribe 5 and tried downgrading the driver as of
yet.

Also trying to configure a dual screen setup (extended or mirrored) and
just hitting OK rather than Test seems to crash the applet but that's
another matter for another bug I'll report once I have done some more
conclusive testing,
