I managed to fix this, but I'm not sure why:

I changed the following line in xorg.conf:

Option         "metamodes" "CRT: 1440x900 +0+0, DFP: 1440x900 +1440+0;
CRT: 1440x900 +0+0, DFP: 1920x1200 +1440+0; DFP: 1920x1200"

To:

Option         "metamodes" "CRT: 1440x900 +0+0, DFP: 1440x900 +1440+0;
CRT: 1440x900 +0+0, DFP: 1920x1200 +1440+0"

And that solved it. Not sure what the reaction will be when the external
monitor is not plugged in.
