I'm afraid that's way over my head. Furthermore, since I'm not sure when the freeze started to occur, I may as well waste a lot of effort for nothing. The workaround seems to do its job although I would like to be able to choose whether I want to just turn off screen or suspend the laptop when I close the lid. Thank you very much for your help.
