Bug is reproducible with Thunderbird, although I still don't have a clue on what triggers the bug. In the buggy state, the mouse highlight GUI elements lower than the mouse pointer actually is. So, for example (with random numbers) if pointer.x = 100 & pointer.y = 100, then pointed.x = 120 & pointed.y = 100. Temporary fix: unmaximizing and maximizing the windows again.
