This may be related to issues with the Nvidia driver. I've been told and
read that Nvidia v100.14.11 in particular has a problem that has been
seen mostly with Compiz if indirect-rendering is enabled.  The solution
to that issue is to remove --indirect-rendering from the compiz startup
command.

If using a Compiz install from Amaranth's launchpad repository, you can
edit /usr/bin/compiz and change INDIRECT=1 to INDIRECT=0.

You may be able to recover control of the PC using  Ctrl+Alt+SysReq+K -
this will kill gdm and restart it and, if you're lucky, bring up the
login screen.
