(1)  However, it did not resolve the issue
* install -f failed
* clean appeared to do nothing
* update downloaded kernel image version 60
* install -f (again) again failed:
I get error messages as before, including
debconf: Perl may be unconfigured (base defines neither package nor 
VERSION--version check failed at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/DbDriver.pm 
line 8.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at 
/usr/share/perl5/Debconf/DbDriver.pm line 8.
  ...
syntax error at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Question.pm line 148, near 
"debug developer"

(2)  Bug on bugs.launchpad.net (!)

Failed to update bug to Confirmed: a load of HTML/JavaScript appeared on 
the pop-up (in red) after I clicked on Confirmed.  When I clicked on OK, 
the pop-up vanished but the bug was still Incomplete.

Failed to post the above on bugs.launchpad.net - the same pop-up 
appeared (labelled Error)

I have Firefox 27.0.1
