Public bug reported: On the three 14.04 installs I've done, I've noticed this same situation come up. As seen in the screenshot below, when you receive an instant message you get a number on top of the messaging application in the Unity bar. This isn't the case in 14.04.

With Empathy in particular I did notice that brand new conversations do list a "1" there, but once I engage in conversation and later background Empathy, new messages do not put a number on the icon to indicate that I have unread messages. In prior releases of Ubuntu, this seemed to always work. Thank you for your time!
