Before uninstalling evms, I also had two udev processes running and the computer was constantly accessing its drives. There was a rhythm: CD on one, then USB HD on two. 1,2 1,2 1, 2 it was going constantly. While synaptic was still in the process of removing evms, the rhythm stopped. I checked ps aux | grep udev and behold there was only one udev process. Worked like a charm, and my USB HD is now being recognized again.
