It happened to me on a fresh install of 12.04. It's not about full disk partitions because I'm not even at 50% of my disks. It might be about indexing large files (I downloaded several VMs). Removing the exec permissions on /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-metadata "fixes" it but I'm losing some functionality. Most evidently, the desktop doesn't remember the position of the icons across logout/logins. I wonder what else is broken.
