Thanks for the suggestion AlpineCarver.  I tried the various BIOS
options on my computer (Dell XPS), these options being:

1. Raid Autodetect/AHCI
2. Raid Autodetaect/ATA
3. SATA/PATA combination mode.

(There's another option but it's not relevant), the default value is
option (1).  At any rate, none of the options made any difference, the
CD drive still has the same behavior.  I should also add that I
installed a new cable (a long shot, I know, since the drive works under
Windows) and, as expected, that had no effect either.

Still exactly the same behavior and out of things to try.  Any help (or
a bug fix!) appreciated.
