Just eject the modem's CD-ROM to switch to usbserial mode. eg: eject /dev/sr1 Where sr1 refers to the modem's USB Storage mode.
The device then switches to modem mode. Saucy and Trusty's kernels already have the appropriate drivers, so the modem will be detected automatically after that.
