The issue is that the auto detection currently fails miserably.
The issue has nothing to do with the xll config file, and everything with GDM
I have disabled GDM and ran startxfce4 (xubuntu) and the fonts were fine.

davmor2, did you read my post in its entirety? no-one complains that the 
keyboard detection algorithm  is worthless, because they see that it does not 
work and is going to select the wrong keyboard layout, and gives the user the 
option to correct this before completing the install.
Thus, as I have  suggested, we need to display some kind of splash  screen to 
display the results of the choice. Or, we can use the proven method used in 
feisty
