Has anyone tried removing the evms and evms-ncurses packages? I had this same freezing problem (with or without a disc in the drive), and this workaround worked for me:
apt-get remove evms evms-ncurses This is the "enterprise volume management system", which most desktop users do not actually need. Of course, your mileage may vary, but I suspect that if you are using this, it's because you set it up yourself.
