This happens in trusty but not exactly as described.
The crash only occurs if one attempts to create the startup disk *before* s-d-c 
has 'acknowledged'  that the deleting of an existing partition on the drive is 
completed.
The issue is that it never does reach that point even though the the delete 
process has in fact been done
