Same problem. And resuming is even worth! There are long periods where there is no HDD activity and the CPU does not seem to be doing much either. Maybe it is related to my RAM size (1.5 GB)? Works much faster on my old 256MB Laptop.
Anyhow, swsusp2 has always worked better for me but I hate to patch my kernel.
