My machine: DELL Inspiron 3521 Processor I3 Video Intel HD4000 - Ubuntu 12.04.3 x64 with the latest update on date 2013-12-31
Without any change to grub, isn't possible to change the brightness (The buttons respond but I can only adjust brightness one step down from maximum setting and back). Whith the change into grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_backlight=vendor", the matter seems resolved, but in many cases, during the adjustement of brightness, the system freeze.
