I think my system is suffering with the same (or similar) issue. The symptom is that during normal use (Ubuntu 13.10) the system will lock up. The mouse can still be moved but I can't click on any open applications. The sound services will continue to operate (seemingly in the background). Then I wait for about 10 to 20 seconds and the windows will kind of go nuts (and that's a technical term!) flashing all the windows up seemingly in a random order until it finally shows just the wall paper (background) and then settles down with a crash report. At that point, the system is either completely back to normal, or partially OK (the missing aspect being the menu bars of all open applications - in which case a re-boot is necessary).
The system is running a dual Intel CPUs (E2220 - 2.4GHz) with an Nvidia GeForce 7100 graphics card. It's a 64-bit install with 4.7Gb RAM. I have already installed the current nvidia drivers and tried to remove nouveau but that seemed to have already been removed.
