I removed my nVidia card and the driver, and Akonadi starts OK now. I didn't experience the problems in the other reports in comment 52 of ^C not working in xterm (or Konsole, either).
I have a suspicion that I was mistaken in comment 32 when I said that Akonadi only started 4 out of 5 times after renaming /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Akonadi.Control.service.
