This is embarrassing, as I have failed in the scientific method. Now the
headphones are working, and it properly returns 0x80000000.

I had one fan (the front fan), not plugged in, as I needed a fan
extension cable for the 3 port slot. Having received one today, I
plugged it in. At the same time, I disconnected and reconnected the
HDAudio. Now Ubuntu is recognizing the sound correctly. Unclear whether
this was actually due to the fan not being plugged in, with a bad
circuit design, or due to the HDAudio connector not being inserted
correctly.

I am following the route of not touching it now, and I am quite sorry
for the time I have wasted you Raymond. Thank you for all the help.
