I can confirm that this fix:

"/etc/modprobe.d/alsabase file:

options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack"

Works for my laptop in Feisty. I have not tried it in Gutsy tribe 4. I
have noticed that the dial on the front of the laptop does control the
sound, but there isn't any granular control of the volume. It jumps from
quiet, to medium, to loud. It goes completely quite 1/2 way down the
dial.

My machine also seemed to take much longer to load to the desktop.

I will try an Edgy live CD. I might be downgrading if the audio support
is better.
