New install of Gusty Gibbon Tribe 4 - same crackly sound when playing Mp3. To temporarily resolve this issue, turn the volume in Rhythmbox down, it is located in the upper right hand corner. By default the program is putting the volume at max, which is send too high of a signal to the sound card, causing the distortion. I was able to turn the Rhythmbox volume down and turn up my Master System volume, and Speaker volume, and had no distortion.
