It's critical that you continue to install updates, otherwise you will not receive fixes for security issues. Updates will not install new packages like the one that was causing you problems.
As for the oem-wireless-rt2x00-1044172 package, I have no idea where you got that package from. I don't see it in the Ubuntu archives, so it wouldn't have been installed automatically.
