I'm also working on it. I've contacted Athur but i got no response. In the meantime i got Adam Burton that is worked on it too. I hope to work together to make this package done. I propose to write any our progress to this page as a comment to this bug, so anybody can see our work and can contribute if he/she wants.
Adam seems to did a good work and he created a diff that already build a gdc package. I'm working on his diff to correct some symlinks that are not set correctly and to package the phobos library.
