But the combination of environment variables you stated still confuses
me. User accounts does not set session env. vars, and if nothing is
stored in accountsservice - which is correct since ~/.pam_environment
isn't there - accountsservice should respond with de or de_DE in your
case when queried for Language (assuming that you edited
/etc/default/locale manually).

Just curious, since I was involved in the the changed lightdm behavior
above, and you made me fear that we overlooked something.
