Hi all, I never solved this, but eventually got rid of the freezing by buying and installing a whitelisted intel centrino wireless card and replacing the broadcom card. Freezing has stopped. It was clearly the broadcom card that was the problem. This is not a great solution, but its been worth it to have a stable machine.
