At the very moment it is impossible to install the Kubuntu-Active
metapackage, because the package Contour contains duplicate files.
Selecting previously unselected package contour-data.

I tried this with a fresh install from the Saucy mini.iso. Refer to the
non-working iso of Kubuntu Active (09-19-2013), which start to plain X
with black background and the X mouse cursor, nothing else. I attach the
full logs from APT. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
