I have reason to believe that this issue is now resolved for me with Linux 3.8.0-31, which appears to be the healthiest kernel so far without resorting to trying the mainline kernel.
After already a number of boot-ups, I'm pleased to say that I've not suffered from any "black screen of death" problems as I did with the kernels mentioned in the title of this bug report. For me at least, this bug may be closed.
