I tried creating a new users, enabled effects and it does work correctly. Next I removed all my current compiz settings(leftover from Feisty) from the user account that exibits the problem and compiz switches workspaces correctly. It no longer spins the cube, but slides left and right as expected. So leftover preferences from Feisty desktop-effects appears to be the problem.
