I'm having a similar problem. Ever since upgrading to Ubuntu 7.04, beep doesn't seem to work. In fact it's actually the PC-Speaker that fails to produce any sound. Beep, ^G , printf "\a" ..nothing works.
I've checked gnome volume control, sound preferences, as well as modprobed pcspkr but to no avail.
