I have the same issue: I am unable to mount or access my dvd drive

the error screen shows:

Unable to mount selected volume 
mount: special device /dev/hda does not exist

It appears no dvd drive is being recognized ... I know it is not broken
because Ubuntu was loaded from a cd --by a friend-- but I would like to
be able to understand this and correct it. Thanks.
