Running Kubuntu Feisty (KDE 3.5.6) and have the same problem. For some reason I lost all the placements of my desktop icons a few days ago and my KDE panel was reset to default, this morning I noticed that CDs and removable media don't show up on the desktop anymore. The KDE Daemon window show up when I insert them, and they do get mounted, but I can't easily eject / safely remove them.
