I'm glad to report that the problem as I described it is gone in Feisty. There still is a little problem about switching users: the second logged-in user cannot use Synaptics touchpad as long as the first one remains logged in. This problem is not too much hardware-specific, as both my laptops (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7400 and Lenovo 3000 N100) suffer the same symptoms.
