I did some additional investigation and found that the kernel version is set to 3.4 from the ChrUbuntu installation and the upgrade mechanism doesn't update the kernel properly in that situation. Essentially there's some google specific libraries that need to get built into the kernel package. Of course I failed when I tried to do that with the saucy kernel package so I'm not sure how to proceed at this point. Thanks for looking at things.
