Hello Dave, Just recently, I finally managed to push the new version of "googleearth-package" (1.0) into Debian Sid/Jessie, this version deals with the problem you've described in your report above.
However, "Debian import freeze" for Saucy has already been made, and it doesn't seem like 1.0 will make it into 13.10 release. To not leave Ubuntu users neglected, I decided to upload the same version for Ubuntu 12.04/12.10/13.04/13.10 to my PPA dedicated to "googleearth-package".
