You're right, I need to elaborate, sorry. Actually, X _is_ working, only I wasn't brave enough to wait it out. This is what happens on my laptop: as soon as X changes screen mode, I see a very dark grayish distorted image of the boot splash. The gray starts to brighten and it brightens until almost all of the screen is white. At that time, the screen changes again and X starts in 1024x768, whereas my screen supports 1400x1050. Glxinfo tells me that even dri is working and X uses the ati driver. It might be a bug in this driver. The resolution is a minor issue (I think) because dapper didn't install with it and 1400x1050 isn't in the xorg.conf. I attach all relevant output and a picture of the screen.
