Additional information: While debugging another issue on this same laptop (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1214180) I installed and booted into the latest mainline kernel (labeled v3.11-rc6-saucy, following instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds
This kernel did **not** fix my brightness problems.
