Hi, maybe im late to comment. But i just want to sharing because i get this problem too. I use ubuntu 12.04 and can not shutdown or restart from lightdm. To fix this i remove lightdm. in terminal:
sudo aptget purge lightdm unity-greeter sudo apt-get install lightdm unity-greeter sudo usermod -a -G lightdm yourusername (example sudo usermod -a -G lightdm joe) sudo reboot And i can click shutdown and restart from lightdm again :) Hope this works.
