Scott: Thank you very much for the prompt reply and interesting to note that not everyone is experiencing this problem. I will try to be more specific. When I say 'break' I mean that any of the above mentioned updates insist on removing 'kubuntu-desktop' which as far as I understand is an integral part of kubuntu/kde. I have tried accepting the update and although the result is still bootable it is not pretty to look at with fonts reduced in size to near invisibilty and various other faults. I didn't keep the result long enough to make a list of all of them but reinstalled from a disk image. Here is the output of the 'dist-upgrade' command:
