You're right, an error occurred the previous night, when the computer was unattended, and I didn't notice (dmesg output below). I rebooted anyway so the error state is now lost.
Are you suggesting that I could have reset the i915_error_state and catting it would then have printed the subsequent error state? Or do I have to reset it after every error?
