OK, a bit of mud on my face. It seems I hadn't been pestered by update- manager for quite some time, so when I manually ran it, there was quite a large list of updates available. So for much for the "notify me weekly preference" ( but that's another problem ).
I'm quite happy to say that after the update, the problem *finally* seems to be resolved in chromium-browser and xchat-gnome. Awesome!!!
