I got this error too (ErrorMessage: SystemError in cache.commit(): installArchives() failed).
This is after doing an upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, which crashed in the middle. And then I got the message you got: The upgrade aborts now. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a). Then I did a "Partial Upgrade", which I thought was successful... Then I restarted my system.
