So, this bug was caused by changes to the Ubuntu SDK. Those changes were
never backported to raring and as such this bug does not technically
exist in raring (I just booted a fresh raring install in a VM and
confirmed that friends-app runs fine).

Most likely what's happening is that you've enabled the ubuntu SDK PPA,
which means you're using the saucy version of the SDK on raring, and
that's why you're hitting this bug (the raring version of friends-app is
not compatible with the saucy version of the SDK).

We're looking into publishing the saucy version of friends-app into the
ubuntu SDK so that raring users who enable the PPA will get a working
combination of friends-app + SDK, however if you're in a hurry to get
things working today, you might want to consider disabling the SDK PPA
and downgrading to the raring version of the SDK. That will result in a
working friends-app, even though it's a little bit older.

Or you can always update to saucy ;-)

** Changed in: friends-app (Ubuntu)
