Thank you for your reply. I did some testing myself and it looks like that Software Centre is not meant to be run as root. Starting it with sudo works but the application was very slow when I tried to open the list of installed updates. could you confirm whether starting software- centre works as a normal user (when the terminal displays ~ and not #)? Thanks.
