Public bug reported:

Hello,

When using chrome I often get a GPU hang. It's been happening for a few
months now, but I finally noticed that there is a correlation with
notification popups (such as a gmail chat or new email) generated by
chrome and a lockup.

When the GPU locks up the system becomes incredibly slow and the screen
refresh rate is terrible. I switch out to another local terminal,
restart lightdm and everything is back to speed.
